The high-end VR headset Crystal Super is one of the few devices that allows users to swap optical modules to change resolution (pixels per degree), field of view, or display technology, for example. Repairs are also intended to be facilitated by modularity. It was only in the fall of last year that Pimax introduced a micro-OLED variant for the Crystal, among other things. Until now, this concept was based on a special 70-pin connector that made all models and modules compatible with each other. However, this very connector is now being removed.

As Pimax announced in a blog post, the component is no longer produced by the supplier. The company is reacting to this by switching to a new connector type from a new supplier. This results in two technically separate versions of the headset and modules, which are no longer compatible with each other.

According to the manufacturer, anyone buying a new device in the future will receive a package coordinated at the factory, consisting of the VR headset and the desired optical module. For later module orders, the serial number must be provided so that Pimax can deliver the correct variant. In the course of the transition, however, modules with the new connector were accidentally shipped even before the official announcement. Affected customers are to be informed immediately to clarify compatibility.

According to Pimax Head of Communications Jaap Grolleman, there is no outwardly visible difference between the two connection types, even though they are technically different. This makes it difficult for users to assign modules unambiguously – especially when buying used. Pimax refers here to customer service, which is supposed to help with assignment problems.

The company states that it will continue to keep spare parts for older devices available for repairs and support. Speaking to industry magazine RoadToVR, Grolleman expressed optimism. Internal analyses had shown that the stock would be sufficient to supply all owners of previous models with compatible modules throughout the product's entire lifespan.

To ensure supply, all stock from the previous supplier has been purchased. In addition, the company had already pointed out possible bottlenecks before this announcement, started production of the new models early, and therefore also delayed the delivery of older orders to switch to the new standard immediately.
