Automaker BMW is researching with the Center of Excellence of the University of Zagreb (Regional Center of Excellence for Robotic Technologies, CRTA) in the research project “Insight” on how AI models can help improve battery cell manufacturing. The company announced this on Monday. BMW aims to save raw materials and reduce development times and costs for battery cells.

In Munich's Battery Cell Competence Center (BCCC), BMW develops new high-voltage batteries. However, the development of new battery cells and corresponding production facilities is complex and consumes a lot of time and material. The research project “Insight” relies on artificial intelligence (AI) to accelerate battery cell development and production. AI models are intended to analyze existing experimental data and real-time data from ongoing battery cell production. The goal is to more accurately predict the process parameters and performance data of a battery cell. The number of test series otherwise required for this can then be significantly reduced, thus reducing the time required by up to 50 percent. In addition to reducing test series, AI can also help to dispense with the “quarantine” of battery cells. Finished battery cells are stored under specific thermal conditions after production and an initial charge. Only then are they installed in a battery housing. This period, known as “quarantine,” requires a lot of storage space. However, the researchers of the “Insight” project have found a way to fully analyze the battery cells using AI, making quarantine no longer necessary. This could reduce storage time and capacity, and even eliminate “quarantine” completely.

The joint research project “Insight” by BMW and CRTA has been running since 2024. In the project, AI models are being developed that can recognize patterns in datasets from tests and production, thereby making predictions on how production can be improved in terms of performance, quality, and costs. In their research, the “Insight” scientists also consider other areas of battery cell manufacturing across the entire value chain. This includes, for example, electrode manufacturing, quality control, and the development of recycling options.
