“Can you hear me?”, “Is the mic on?” These everyday phrases might soon be a thing of the past in Microsoft Teams, as Microsoft wants to help plagued Teams users with a microphone test. It will soon be possible to start it directly before joining a meeting.
According to a new entry in Microsoft's 365 Admin Center (MC1288530, copy at merill.net), Teams will get a microphone test that also checks audio output. Microsoft writes that Teams will receive a new standard feature that allows users to start the microphone and speakers on the dialog before joining a session. Microsoft plans to roll out the feature starting in May.
Specifically, Microsoft promises that the assistance for correctly selecting audio devices will reduce interruptions and disruptions in meetings. Admins don't need to do anything, and there are therefore no compliance concerns. Microsoft has also added an entry to the Microsoft 365 roadmap. According to this, the function is currently still in development; about two weeks ago, on April 10, 2026, the developers added the entry. The rollout is scheduled to start in mid-May 2026 and should be completed almost immediately.

The function selects the input device, records a short audio snippet, and then plays it back. This is usually sufficient to detect whether the audio hardware is working and ensure that the correct devices are selected and that users can be heard and can also hear other participants once the meeting begins.

After rather negative headlines about Teams, such as due to non-functional right-click pasting, this is certainly good news for many – a feature that builds anticipation.
