Apple has introduced a new billing option for auto-renewable subscriptions in the App Store. Developers can now offer users monthly payments with a binding term of twelve months – essentially an installment plan for annual subscriptions at a reduced monthly price. And breaking it down into monthly installments is likely to make annual subscriptions appear more attractive overall. Meanwhile, developers gain more planning security when users commit for a year.
As Apple announces in its Developer News, the new option can be configured in App Store Connect immediately and tested in Xcode. It will go live with the upcoming operating system versions iOS 26.5, iPadOS 26.5, macOS Tahoe 26.5, tvOS 26.5, and visionOS 26.5, which Apple has announced for May 2026. Notably, the USA and Singapore are excluded from the new subscription variant. Apple gives no reasons for the exclusion; regulatory peculiarities or market-specific considerations are conceivable. For developers offering subscriptions, Apple has also recently massively expanded the analytics area in App Store Connect. With over 100 new metrics for in-app purchases and subscriptions, cohort analyses and conversion data can be evaluated.
Configuration in App Store Connect
Technically, developers need to create a subscription group in App Store Connect and create a subscription product with a term of “1 year” within it. Outside the USA and Singapore, the system will then automatically activate the option for monthly billing with an annual commitment. Developers can set prices per country, control availability, and enable upgrades and downgrades between different subscription tiers via so-called levels. Apple refers to the detailed documentation on subscriptions and the StoreKit APIs for integration into apps.
Existing annual subscriptions remain unaffected by the change. The new option complements the existing offering – developers retain full control over which subscription variants they wish to offer.

Transparency for users, benefits for developers
For subscribers, Apple promises transparency: completed and remaining payments should be visible in the account settings. Before renewal after the twelve-month period expires, Apple sends emails and push notifications. Cancellation is possible at any time; the subscription will then not renew after the twelve months. Regarding European consumer rights, the structure should be compatible with the EU Consumer Rights Directive: cancellation remains uncomplicated, and the 14-day right of withdrawal still applies.
For developers, especially in price-sensitive markets like Germany, the model lowers the entry barrier: instead of a large one-time payment for an annual subscription, users see manageable monthly amounts. This can increase the conversion rate and reduce churn. In parallel, Apple is also expanding advertising options in the App Store. From 2026, more ads will appear in search results, offering developers additional ways to make their apps known. For revenue, Apple's usual model applies: 70 percent in the first year, then 85 percent; participants in the Small Business Program receive 85 percent from the start.
Comparison with Google Play
Google offers a similar concept in the Play Store with payment plans, where users pay discounted monthly installments. However, there is no exact equivalent to the 12-month commitment with monthly billing.
