The practical tool collection PowerToys for Windows has been released in version 0.99. It not only cleans up annoying errors but also has new functions on board.
In the release announcement for PowerToys 0.99, the developers list the “Grab and Move” function first as a major innovation. It allows windows to be moved or resized without touching the title bar or side bar. With the “Alt” key pressed, users can click anywhere in a window and move the window by pressing and holding the left mouse button. With the “Alt” key and right mouse click, the window size can be changed, each in the direction of mouse movement. Those who already use the “Alt” key for system functions can also switch this to the “Windows” key.
The second innovation is called “Power Display.” When activated, it provides a new tray icon. Clicking on it then provides settings for the connected monitors, provided they support it. Briefly tried on a laptop, for example, there is a brightness control for the internal display, and for the connected 4K monitor, there are also contrast and color temperature, as well as volume. Interesting effect: If the monitor draws too much power from the USB-C port and therefore switches off, it flickers a bit, and the last working brightness value is active. The feature is not faster than brightness keys on the keyboard, but it targets individual displays specifically. Another bonus: The function also allows creating profiles. This way, different brightness and color profiles can be set up and quickly selected for watching movies or playing games and working.
PowerToys: Minor improvements
The command palette has received various performance and stability improvements, but also new capabilities: for example, a history for the calculator or the ability to display raw text and zoomable images directly in the content area. Pinning commands now allow selecting where the entry should appear in the dock and whether titles and subtitles should be shown. The new keyboard manager now allows customizing recorded key combinations. ZoomIt also supports “long screenshots,” which capture pages or content beyond the visible screen area. Interested parties can find more detailed information in the release announcement.
