Google's AI assistant Gemini is getting new tricks in Germany that are intended to make it more of a personal companion. This goal has basically been on Google's agenda for a long time. In addition, chat histories and other information from other AI apps can now be transferred directly into Gemini using a transfer tool.

As Google writes in its announcement, the company wants to develop Gemini into “an assistant that truly understands you – one that evolves with your needs instead of delivering one-size-fits-all answers” – ultimately, what OpenAI also wants to achieve with ChatGPT. While Gemini has been able to process more personal information in the US for some time through the personal intelligence function, Google is now providing a kind of precursor in Germany with the “Remembered Information” feature.

Unlike Personal Intelligence, which has access to Gmail, Photos, search history, and YouTube history, among other things, and can analyze their content, draw conclusions, and “proactively provide insights,” the function introduced here is not that advanced.

Instead, with the help of the “Remembered Information” function, Gemini can “learn from your past conversations over time.” If users have activated this setting, Gemini can remember important details and preferences that users have shared in conversations with the AI. This leads to “more natural and relevant conversations, as if you were working with an assistant who is already up to date,” according to Google.

As an example, Google mentions a conversation with Gemini about a favorite comic book and how the characters' powers develop. If you now ask Gemini to brainstorm a “unique theme for a birthday party” for the user, the AI could suggest a celebration based on the comic's favorite character, “including thematically appropriate food and a custom photo booth with props.”

According to Google, the rollout of the function begins immediately and is expected to be available to all users in the coming weeks. For users in the European Economic Area, a limited version of personalization will initially be available. This setting is activated by default; the switch to turn it off can be found in the settings in the Gemini app under “Personal Context” > “Remembered Information.” Conversations can be managed and deleted in Gemini app activities.

In addition, Google is integrating an import function for reminders and chat histories that allows users to import their data from competitors' tools into Gemini. “Once you import these reminders, Gemini will understand the same key facts that you've shared with other apps, such as your interests or where you grew up. Instead of starting from scratch, you can quickly bring Gemini up to speed on what matters most to you,” the company writes.

Users can feed Gemini with their chats and other data from third-party providers via an import function in the future.

The next major announcements for Gemini and Google's AI cosmos are expected to be presented during the I/O 2026 developer conference, held between May 19 and 20. Last year, the company gave an outlook on a proactive assistant, which was later released regionally in the form of personal intelligence, among other things. This year, there are likely to be more agentic functions that help automate Android. Sameer Samat, head of the Android ecosystem, confirmed this in January.
