Modder gets Linux running on Playstation 5
The ps5-linux project turns the Playstation 5 into a Linux PC with some effort. However, this only works with certain consoles.

Modder Andy Nguyen has succeeded in installing Linux on a Playstation 5. His GitHub project ps5-linux-loader allows other interested users to try it out as well – under certain conditions. The hack only works with specific console models and certain firmware versions.
Furthermore, it is not possible to run Linux and the PS5's operating system in dual-boot, Nguyen writes on GitHub. The exploit must instead be performed anew after each restart to use Linux. Once the PS5 is in Linux mode, it can be used much like a normal computer. For example, it is possible to install Steam and play PC games through it.
Exploit in older firmware versions
Nguyen uses a security vulnerability in some older firmware versions of the Playstation 5. Specifically, the hack only works with firmware versions 3.xx or 4.xx. Another prerequisite is the bulkier version of the Playstation 5 that was released before the “Slim” redesign. Nguyen also warns that some peripherals may not function correctly. Image output is limited to 60 Hertz regardless of resolution, but 4K resolution at 3840 × 2160 pixels is possible.
Code is first injected via a firmware vulnerability. Subsequently, a so-called payload is loaded, which provides extended access to the system. Finally, a loader as a bootstrapping component loads a customized Linux kernel into the main memory. On GitHub, Nguyen provides the loader, kernel, and other components along with instructions for users to try it themselves.

The project could be particularly interesting for hobbyists; it is probably not truly suitable for everyday use due to the limitations. A Linux-PS5 would be a good deal: for the price of a Playstation 5, you wouldn't get a comparably powerful gaming PC new. This also applies after the third price increase of Sony's console.
As a modder, Nguyen has already released several jailbreak projects. In 2024, he and other hobbyists managed to mod the cloud console Playstation Portal so that it can play PSP titles.
