Vienna-based Proxmox Server Solutions GmbH has released Proxmox Backup Server 4.2. Like the PVE 9.1 virtualization platform, the open-source backup solution is based on Debian GNU/Linux “Trixie.” The backup server uses Trixie 13.4 with a Linux kernel 7.0 and ZFS 2.4.1.
Backup groups and namespaces can now be moved to other locations within the same datastore. This allows users to reorganize existing backups while ensuring data consistency. Optional group locking helps ensure data consistency throughout the entire process.
Multiple pull and push jobs in parallel
Push synchronization jobs can now be configured to encrypt snapshots before sending them to remote datastores. This can be used, for example, to transfer snapshots to Proxmox Backup Server instances in less trusted locations outside the company, though caution should be exercised. Pull synchronization jobs can be configured to automatically decrypt encrypted snapshots on the remote server. Pull and push synchronization jobs can be processed in parallel via the new “worker-threads” property.
S3-compatible object storage now an official backup storage backend
The use of S3-compatible object storage as a backend for backup storage has completed its technology preview phase and is now officially supported, including “request statistics” and “notification thresholds”.
S3-based datastores can track the number of “request counts” and data traffic to provide deeper insights into operations and better monitoring. This is important for being notified when traffic exceeds thresholds.

Additionally, there are many small improvements in the web GUI, updated translations, support for up to 256 tape drives per changer, and the ability to create PXE and iPXE compatible ISO images for automatic installation.
