With the “Android Show: I/O Edition,” Google is decoupling the most important announcements regarding its own mobile operating system from the major developer conference I/O. The Android event will take place on May 12 at 7 PM our time – one week before Google I/O, which begins on May 19. This is the second “Android Show: I/O Edition” – Google introduced the format in 2025 and has added further editions since then.
Android 17 and more
As Google writes in the description of the announcement video for the event, 2026 “is going to be one of the biggest years for Android yet.” Specific details are not provided in the pre-announcement, but it is clear that the company will announce further details about Android 17 and Wear OS 7 in this context. It is also expected to get a first look at the Android for PCs currently in development, which is running under the codename Aluminium OS. Aluminium OS can be understood as ChromeOS with an Android foundation and a lot of AI based on Gemini.

Regarding Android 17, the new Android iteration is in the final stages of its beta phase. So far, features such as app bubbles, separate Wi-Fi and mobile data tiles in quick settings, and protection against attacks by quantum computers are known. Furthermore, a kind of NameDrop function might be introduced in Android – at least Google is working on a feature to share files and more between Android devices by holding them close together.
The agents are coming
In addition, Google will bring more AI into its mobile OS with Android 17: “We are moving from an operating system to an intelligent system, a platform that truly understands you and works for you,” wrote Android ecosystem chief Sameer Samat on LinkedIn. This seems to indicate that the manufacturer is continuing what it has repeatedly demonstrated at I/O in Project Astra for years.

Most recently, at the beginning of this year, Google announced the first agentic functions for the Pixel 10 and Galaxy S26 in the USA and Korea, with which AI should be able to perform multi-step tasks. This allows the chatbot to be used, for example, for ordering ride services, groceries, or other purchases. At the time, Android ecosystem chief Samat said that this was just the beginning: With Android 17, Google plans to expand the agentic functions. For this purpose, Google is expanding the UI automation framework for AI agents and assistants, which will be capable of “intelligently executing general tasks in users' installed apps.”
In 2025, as part of the Android Show, Google announced Material 3 Expressive, the Find Hub (only in English-speaking countries), and the expansion of Gemini for Android Auto, Wear OS, and Google TV.
