Google is expanding the functionality of the Phone app for Android. In the future, calls received via third-party VoIP apps will also be displayed in it. Google calls this feature “Unified Call Log”.
Central Point of Contact
With the unified call log, Google is following in Apple's footsteps, as Apple has offered such integration to third-party apps via CallKit for a longer time. With the update to Jetpack Telecom v1.1.0 (in the alpha version), Google offers “native-level visibility and convenience to third-party VoIP apps”.
This means that the Phone app will be able to display a unified call log for all calls, native callback functions, and improved call handling in the future.
This means that calls made via WhatsApp, Meet, or Telegram will also appear in the Phone app's call log. Furthermore, users can initiate a call via the respective service directly from the Phone app; a tap on the call will forward them to the original app. The goal of the function is more convenience: Previously, users had to open individual third-party apps to view their VoIP call history or return a missed call.
If users do not want calls from WhatsApp and other third-party apps to appear in the Phone app, they can exclude them from the list.

Google Meet First
It might take some time before WhatsApp calls appear in the app anyway. According to Google, the integration will be rolled out gradually and will initially be limited to Google's own Meet app.

App developers also need to take action for their app to be displayed in the Phone app, as Google writes in the developer documentation: They need to test the APIs and update their apps accordingly. The function will also only be available on devices with Android 16.1 (QPR1) or newer. It is already available on Pixel devices with the latest Android Canary version and the QPR1 beta of Android 17.
Other app developers are already working on the implementation. As we discovered, in the Phone app of Android 17 QPR1 Beta 3, WhatsApp can already be selected and deselected alongside Meet. The setting can be found under “Call Accounts.”
