With the new Android Automotive features announced during Android Show: I/O Edition, vehicles are gaining new AI capabilities. During Google I/O 2026, Volvo showcased the EX60 model with “predictive” Google Gemini. Gemini will gain access to the vehicle's own cameras, among other things, to gain a better real-time understanding of the vehicle's surroundings.

Volvo writes in its announcement that Google Gemini, using the camera – if the driver allows it – analyzes the surroundings from the vehicle's perspective. According to the company, the AI can be used to “understand traffic signs and road markings even better.” For example, information about nearby sights or restaurants can be retrieved during a holiday trip abroad.

Furthermore, parking is intended to become easier and more comfortable, Volvo explains. The AI can read and interpret signs in real-time, helping drivers to “recognize time restrictions, no-parking zones, and required parking permits, as well as find out the applicable fees.”

One of the first vehicles with AI functions appears to be the Volvo EX60 model: it “forms the ideal platform for exploring the future of contextual driving experiences,” explains Alwin Bakkenes, Head of Global Software Development at Volvo Cars. The presented concepts are intended to provide a first glimpse into “how contextual AI experiences will become part of the everyday driving experience in the future,” it continues.

According to Google, it works closely with car manufacturers like Volvo. This enables deeper integration into vehicle hardware. Therefore, Gemini can answer vehicle-specific questions in the future, such as the function of a mysterious warning light on the dashboard or whether the TV you want to transport fits in the trunk.

Volvo is more specific about the introduction of immersive navigation in Google Maps: this will initially be offered in the Volvo EX60, EX90, and ES90 models. Since the vehicle's front camera is also used for this, real-time lane guidance is more precise, for example. It is also executed entirely within the vehicle. Live lane guidance also recognizes which lane you are in and can provide real-time voice prompts on when to change lanes or exit.

According to Volvo, voice guidance offers not only information on distance and time but also real-world landmarks such as: “Drive past this traffic light and turn left into the next street after the library.”

Volvo is not the only company relying on Android Automotive with Google services. Other partners include Ford, Polestar, Renault, Nissan, BYD, Mitsubishi, and others. It is still unclear which of the vehicle manufacturers will integrate the new Gemini functions and immersive navigation into their cars.
