The next major FritzOS firmware carries the version number 8.50. Anyone using a Fritzbox 7590 AX can already test the preliminary version, Fritz Labor 8.40. More routers will be added in the coming months before Fritz releases the final firmware.
According to the announcement, the manufacturer wants to improve the wizard for switching to new Fritzbox, child safety, and smart home functions with the new FritzOS according to the announcement. In the future, if-then rules with multiple triggers can be defined so that multiple devices can trigger a routine. For the Fritz smart plugs Smart Energy 200 and 210, users can set a maximum load and duration from which the plugs will cut off the power supply.
Matter is finally coming
FritzOS 8.50 also supports the cross-manufacturer smart home standard Matter for the first time, which Fritz promised over three years ago for new Fritzbox. So far, only the standalone Fritz Smart Gateway in the Fritz universe mastered the standard. However, the Fritzbox 7590 AX does not have a Matter-capable gateway; Fritz plans to test the function on the Fritzbox 5690 Pro soon.
Telephones connected via DECT (Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications) will receive a simplified mode that allows speed dial numbers and functions on the keys. In addition, users can store up to four emergency contacts for SOS emergency calls, which will be automatically called one after another in emergencies.

Fritz Labor 8.40 and the upcoming FritzOS 8.50 are also intended to serve as a basis for expanding the MyFritz app on smartphones. “Communication and notifications between Fritzbox and MyFritz app have been improved and are a preparation for MyFritz app extensions,” writes the manufacturer in its announcement.
In the future, the app is intended to serve as a central point of contact for setting up and controlling Fritzbox. Setting recommendations for the home network are also planned. Those who prefer to access the router via the web interface will be able to call it up in the future via the browser address fritzbox.local. Fewer browser warnings are expected to appear under this address.
