For the free CMS WordPress, ATmosphere has now also released an official plug-in that establishes a direct connection to the AT Protocol and thus to Bluesky and other internet services. This allows posts published via WordPress to be sent directly to the timeline of Bluesky users without detours, and reactions and replies from there also land on WordPress. While there were already so-called cross-posting tools for this. With the plug-in, the blog on which it is used becomes a "place on the protocol" and an independent participant. It does not replace previous tools, but only offers a closer form of integration, explain those responsible.

Anyone who wants to use the plug-in can install it directly in WordPress or download the necessary data. Afterwards, it must be linked to an account, which can be one on Bluesky or connected services like Eurosky. In WordPress, you can then set which type of content lands on the AT Protocol and how it should look. For example, only texts can be shared, but it is also possible to send a link to the blog entry with each one. If you want, you can even send old blog entries to Bluesky retroactively; this always works for ten individual entries and must be re-initiated for the next ones. Finally, the plug-in also allows the URL of the blog to be made the handle of the Bluesky account.

The plug-in was developed, among others, by Matthias Pfefferle, who has dedicated himself for years to connecting WordPress to the Fediverse around Mastodon & Co. In 2023, he was recruited by WordPress operator Automattic. The release of version 1.0 of the ATmosphere plug-in was now announced on the blog for this ActivityPub plug-in. If desired, they will set up their own blog, but for now those responsible ask for feedback. For now, they will certainly observe how many people actually use the technology. So far, the plug-in has only been installed on a few blogs, and ActivityPub is only used on a few thousand active installations. Meanwhile, beyond 44 million accounts have already been set up on Bluesky.
