The sequel to “A Minecraft Movie” is titled “A Minecraft Movie Squared” in English, Warner Bros. announced at the “Minecraft Live” event on Saturday. Along with the title, the studio released a short behind-the-scenes video from the set in New Zealand, which also features some influencers from the “Minecraft” scene.

The video shows actors Jack Black (again as Steve) and Jason Momoa (again as Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison). New to the ensemble is actress Kirsten Dunst; she takes on the role of Alex, the default female player character in “Minecraft.” Alex was introduced in 2014, a few years after release, as an option.
German title still unknown
The title addition “Squared” is an English pun; in a mathematical sense, it means “to the power of two” and thus refers to the second part of the series. However, “Squared” also means square or angular and thus alludes to the blocky look of Minecraft. It cannot be easily translated into German. It is currently unclear what the second “Minecraft” film will be called in German.
Mojang Creative Director Jens Bergensten also announced a build challenge at the event: players can submit their creations on a special event map in the game. After a pre-selection by Mojang, the community will vote on the winners, whose creations will appear in the finished film or in the credits. The winner will also receive an invitation to a private screening of the sequel.

Jared Hess is directing again, and he co-wrote the screenplay with Chris Galletta. Warner Bros. announced the successor in October 2025, after the first film grossed worldwide around 960 million US dollars. The theatrical release is scheduled for July 23, 2027.
