Google has revamped the document scanner for Android. The scanning function in Google Drive and the Files app now masters new tricks like batch scanning and more. As the features are executed directly on the device, at least 8 GB of RAM are required.

The new function was announced by Android ecosystem chief Sameer Samat on X and LinkedIn. In his post, he writes that the update to the scanning function, distributed via Google Play Services, includes an “intelligent batch scan.” This allows multiple pages to be scanned quickly one after another without having to capture each page individually. In a brief test by heise online, it was observed that the scan app captures three adjacent pages almost simultaneously and saves them as separate documents.

Additionally, the app is supposed to recognize duplicates if a page has already been scanned. Also new is the “Auto-Best-Frame” function, which automatically replaces blurry scans with the best available image.

Furthermore, Samat explains that the processing is done entirely on the device. This means it also works offline, and the data remains on the device unless auto-upload is activated. The automatic scanning function can be turned off by tapping the right button. On the left side, there is also a control panel that allows users to access an overview of already captured images, while currently scanned documents are displayed at the bottom of the screen. Tapping on the scans opens the image editor for cropping or further processing.

Google has also updated the look of the scanning function. It now appears in the Material 3 Expressive design language, which Google announced with Android 16.

Last May, Google had already updated the scanning function. At that time, the company implemented an automatic improvement of scans for its MLKit Document Scanner.
