iCloud Mail: Apple can't get a grip on the flood of phishing and spam

Alleged parcel deliveries, prize notifications and supposedly free iCloud storage space: spam and phishing emails are currently flooding the inboxes of many iCloud mail users. Apparently, Apple's spam filter in iCloud is currently not working reliably - or in some cases no longer works at all.
For around a week now, readers have been reporting a noticeable increase in such unwanted emails, which are suddenly no longer automatically sorted out by Apple and end up in their inboxes. The problem has not yet been resolved.
iPhone inbox full of spam
Some of those affected report daily spam mails in the double-digit range, for others it is only a handful per day. The Mac & i editorial team was also able to observe this with an iCloud account. Sorting the emails into the spam folder and reporting them to Apple does not seem to have helped so far. In the previous months, Apple's spam filter usually seemed to work well and sort out the majority of unwanted emails in advance.
Most of the emails are obvious scams for experienced users. Some are also aimed specifically at Apple users and warn that the iCloud storage limit has allegedly been exceeded. One of the phishing emails promises free iCloud storage space as a remedy, stating that you only need to "validate" your Apple ID and credit card details.

Other iCloud addresses as recipients
The subject lines often contain special characters, and iCloud mail addresses of other iCloud users are always listed as recipients - whether these people actually exist remains unclear. Affected users can currently do little more than report the spam mails as spam and thus remove them from their inbox and hope that Apple will get the filtering under control again.
