Replaceable batteries or displays: Tesa Power Strips in smartphones and cars
Power strips for pictures, of course. But did you know that Tesa adhesive strips hold electronic devices and cars together and even stick to Porsche cars?
Ever since the EU regulated that batteries in mobile devices must be replaceable, the energy storage devices in smartphones, tablets and notebooks have been glued in such a way that they can be easily removed. This is precisely one of Tesa's specialties: the strong adhesive strips hold the battery securely in place and can still be removed without leaving any residue in just a few simple steps.
However, bonding batteries is not the only area of application for the power strips. For example, they are also used to stick displays in frames or to attach protective films to sensitive screens. According to Tesa, it has already bonded over two million smartphones or provided the adhesive strips for them.

The company also manufactures its own transparent optical adhesive films, known as Optically Clear Adhesives (OCA), which protect displays from environmental influences.
Hot cars
Special demands are placed on all materials used in the automotive sector. This is because there are enormous temperature differences in the car, down to minus 40 degrees in winter and quickly reaching plus 85 degrees in summer. Outside the vehicle, all components must also be resistant to moisture and UV radiation. When adhesives are used here, the bond must not dissolve, harden or soften even after years.

To ensure this, there are precise specifications and various tests, including mechanical stress tests. At the joint stand of the German Flat Panel Display Forum (DFF) at Display Week, Tesa demonstrated a slightly modified stress test in which lateral forces act on two panels bonded together (see video).

Stress test
Even under continuous load, the bonded parts in the car must not separate from each other. For example, there are test runs in which a bonded display is subjected to a defined weight at 105 degrees Celsius for 1000 hours. The possible bonding radii and bezels are becoming smaller and smaller, however, because the displays can also be shaped better and better in the vehicle.

Another area of application for the adhesive strips: As an alternative to conventional rubber plugs, adhesive pads seal holes in the bodywork that were required for electroplating or painting, for example. This also saves weight, which is particularly important for electric vehicles. In the Porsche, Tesa ensures the corrosion-proof closure of such openings. Trims and emblems are also glued to the bodywork.
Sustainable repair
If an electrical component, a window or a display is broken in an accident, the glued parts can be removed from the vehicle relatively easily and replaced with functioning ones. Without residue-free removal, entire component groups would have to be replaced instead, which is significantly more expensive. The same applies to electronic devices such as smartphones, notebooks or TVs.
