MSI launches the first motherboard with CAMM2 memory
RAM bars in CAMM2 design are not just for notebooks. MSI relies on the new memory form in the Z790 Project Zero Plus.
MSI's Z790 Project Zero Plus is one of the motherboards that have all connections on the rear. This requires a suitable housing.

In future, mainboards for desktop PCs will also come with Compression Attached Memory Modules (CAMMs) as an alternative to the previous Unbuffered Dual Inline Memory Modules (UDIMMs). The latches are then no longer plugged in, but pressed onto a spring contact surface in a similar way to desktop processors. Several screws maximize the contact pressure.
MSI has announcedthe Z790 Project Zero Plus via Twitter / X, the first motherboard that accepts modules according to the current CAMM2 specification with DDR5 components. This has advantages and disadvantages for desktop PCs.
More speed
First and foremost, CAMM2 memory enables higher data transfer rates because the interfering contact points of the RAM slots are eliminated. This should please overclockers in particular. There is also more space for CPU air coolers because the bars rest on the mainboard.
In the design that MSI has opted for, CAMM2 bars are limited to 128 GB. A single bar is connected with 128 bits. If you opt for a module with less storage capacity, you can only increase the capacity later by installing a completely new module. Multiple latches cannot be stacked.
There are no freely available CAMM2 modules yet. However, MSI is cooperating with the memory manufacturer Kingston, which should offer suitable RAM at market launch.

LPCAMM2 conceivable
LPCAMM2 modules with LPDDR5X or LPDDR6 components could be even more exciting in the future. They run at significantly higher clock frequencies, such as LPDDR5X-8533, which would particularly benefit the integrated graphics unit of a processor.
Until now, LPDDR memory was not an issue for desktop PCs because the components had to be soldered in place to achieve their high speed. With LPCAMM2, they are now modular for the first time. At least the memory controllers in AMD's Ryzen 8000G processors can already handle LPDDR RAM due to their notebook pedigree.
