The second season of heating subsidies has begun. From now on, owners of apartment buildings are also eligible to apply, as are homeowners' associations. Since the end of February, only private individuals living in their own single-family home have been eligible to apply. This option has been used 27,000 times so far. The German government has promised the funding at least for this year.
Applications for heating subsidies are submitted to the KfW, as provided for in the Renewable Heating Act (amendment to the Building Energy Act - GEG). BAFA is still responsible for promoting further efficiency improvements such as insulation or window replacement.

The funding consists of a basis of 30 percent of the eligible costs. In addition, there are grant components such as a 20 percent climate bonus, 30 percent income bonus, 5 percent efficiency bonus and an emissions reduction surcharge of 2500 euros for certain biomass systems. The subsidies can add up to 70 percent of the eligible costs. The income-related component of the subsidy is intended as a higher subsidy rate for people with low and medium incomes. In addition to the subsidy, a new, low-interest supplementary loan of up to 120,000 euros per residential unit can also be used.
Eligible projects
Eligible projects include solar thermal systems, biomass heating, heat pumps, fuel cell heating, hydrogen-capable heating and a heating network connection. These can already be started by all applicant groups. If the project is started between December 29, 2023, the date of publication of the funding guideline in the Federal Gazette, and August 31, 2024, the application can be made up until November 30, 2024.
Applications are submitted in the"My KfW" customer portal. To do so, applicants should first commission experts and conclude a supply or service contract. They then register with KfW and apply for a grant. Once the project has been implemented, applicants submit evidence to KfW. Details are described in an article on heise+:
