Sales of semiconductors for AI applications will increase significantly in 2024, according to market researchers at Gartner. At 71 billion US dollars, the market volume will be a third higher than the previous year's turnover of over 53 billion dollars. Gartner then expects sales of around 92 billion dollars in 2025.

The hype surrounding generative AI is driving demand, for example, for high-performance AI chips in data centers. "In 2024, the value of AI accelerators, which are used in servers and relieve data processing from microprocessors, will amount to 21 billion US dollars and increase to 33 billion US dollars by 2028," says Gartner analyst Alan Priestley. The market researchers also expect increased investment by large hyperscalers such as AWS, Google and Microsoft in the development of their own AI chips.

Gartner is also optimistic about AI PCs with an integrated neural processing unit (NPU). They are expected to account for over a fifth of PC deliveries this year (22%). And by the end of 2026, Gartner expects 100 percent of all PCs purchased by companies to be computers with integrated hardware for AI applications.

Just last week, Microsoft presented its vision of the AI PC – the "Copilot Plus PC". These are Windows laptops with dedicated AI hardware and support for AI functions throughout the operating system. With Dell, Lenovo, Samsung, HP, Acer and Asus, all laptop partners also want to bring such "Copilot Plus PCs" onto the market. Microsoft also relies entirely on ARM processors instead of X86 for its own Surface models. The first devices are to be launched on the market in June.
