The AM5 platform for desktop PCs will be with us for a few more years. At the Computex IT trade fair, AMD CEO Lisa Su promised that new processors for AM5 mainboards will be released at least until 2027.

At the presentation of the Ryzen 7000 processors together with the first AM5 mainboards in fall 2022, AMD did not provide any more precise information on how long the platform should last. This was particularly noticeable in view of the promised long-lasting AM4 platform.

It is now clear that at least the next generation of CPUs with Zen 6 architecture should still be released for AM5. We also expect the next but one generation with Zen 7 technology for the platform, as AMD's longevity promises typically apply to genuinely new processors and not just new editions of old models.

Anyone who buys a desktop PC with a Ryzen 7000 processor or a new 9000 model now will therefore have several upgrade options in the following years. Users of previous AM5 mainboards may only have to do without some new features, such as PCI Express 6.0.

AMD announced two new old desktop processors for AM4 mainboards at Computex: Ryzen 9 5900XT and Ryzen 7 5800XT. The company is primarily doing a bit of model maintenance, there are no real innovations.

The Ryzen 9 5900XT is downright confusing. Unlike the previous Ryzen 9 5900X, the XT variant has 16 Zen 3 cores instead of 12. The Ryzen 9 5900XT is basically a 100 MHz slower Ryzen 9 5950X. AMD has given the Ryzen 7 5800XT 100 MHz more boost clock than the previous Ryzen 7 5800X.

In an initial presentation version shared in advance, AMD stated recommended retail prices of 359 and 249 US dollars respectively. AMD later said that the prices were incorrect; the real ones would be shared later for the market launch in July. In order to compete with the Ryzen 5000 already available, the newcomers would have to be significantly lower than the prices mentioned above. The Ryzen 9 5950X, for example, is already available at a lower price (starting from 276,99 €).

Previously rumored Ryzen 5000/7000 processor hybrids remain a pipe dream. At the time, the rumor mill speculated about Zen 4 processors, which combine the compute chiplets of the Ryzen 7000 (Zen 4) with the I/O die of the Ryzen 5000. The hybrids could therefore run with DDR4 RAM and thus on AM4 mainboards. A Ryzen 9 5950X3D with more level 3 cache would also be more exciting than the announced XT models, but is still rare.
