A representative survey reveals that the summer fairytale could be canceled, and not just because of the weather. Tickets are too expensive for most fans, and many people want to avoid public mass events for fear of terrorist attacks, for example. Instead, they are considering keeping their fingers crossed for the teams at private public viewings with friends and acquaintances. After all, after the controversial World Cup in Qatar, Germans are looking forward to the European Football Championship in their own country in a much more positive light.
Private fan mile
In order to experience the soccer match together without access to the stadium or public viewing, fans want to meet up with friends on the private fan mile - i.e. at home in the living room, in the neighbor's garden or in the pub next door. This was the result of a recent study conducted by the University of Hohenheim. An interesting result of the survey: according to co-head of the study Tom Huhnke, employers are now more tolerant compared to previous tournaments. According to the survey, respondents expect to spend around 24 minutes of their working day on European Championship topics.
From June 14, ARD and ZDF will broadcast all of the German team's matches, the semi-finals and the final on free TV. You will need either a large television or a bright projector to show the group matches to their best advantage. In our article "Large screens for the private fan mile", we have put together which devices are recommended for this and what you should consider when making your choice.
It is also crucial to display the games on the screen with as little delay as possible. Because if you don't watch in the living room with the windows closed, you run the risk of the neighbors cheering earlier - which is particularly annoying during penalty shoot-outs.
Reception is possible via the classic DVB reception channels via satellite, cable or DVB-T2, or via TV reception over the internet with a streaming stick for the HDMI input and a suitable app. But beware: if you use the wrong app here, you will lag the other reception channels with latencies of up to one and a half minutes.

No external players are required for the smart TV, as it already has the tuners built in and also offers various streaming apps. For large-screen projection, we recommend a compact DVB-T2 receiver or a streaming device such as the FireTV stick. Read the article "Streaming on the private fan mile" to find out what you should consider when choosing hardware and streaming apps and which method ensures the fastest reception.
Exciting, but too expensive
According to the study by the University of Hohenheim in Stuttgart, for which 1,000 people in Germany were surveyed, over 70% of Germans want to watch the European Men's Football Championship matches at home this year. The main reason they cited was that the price of tickets for the European Championship was too high, especially for the knockout round, i.e. the matches from the round of 16 onwards.
Almost 14% of those surveyed had applied for a ticket for Euro 2024 via the official UEFA ticket portal. Of these, 45% actually received a ticket. Around 10% of those surveyed stated that they were still looking for tickets. Two thirds of those interested would be prepared to purchase a ticket for the Germany matches on the black market. They would pay an average of around 184 euros, with individual willingness to pay varying from 10 euros to a maximum of 2,000 euros per ticket.

Tickets for the Germany matches in the group stage cost at least €480 on the viagogo online platform, with the other matches starting at around €100; Spain v Croatia, for example, is significantly more expensive at at least €400. From the round of 16 onwards, tickets will cost at least 358 euros, with the quarter-finals costing 476 euros and the semi-finals at least 673 euros. Fans can expect to pay at least 1772 euros for the final, with the better seats starting at around 2700 euros.
Germany and France in the lead
Just under a third of Germans see their home country as the favorites to win the 2024 European Championship title - no other national team is as confident of success. However, almost half of Germans also believe that their national team will be eliminated before the semi-finals. Among those surveyed, France (27%) and Spain (11%) are also considered contenders for the European Championship title.
"Football's coming home! – The home European Championship 2024: What does the German population think?" is the title of the Euro 2024 study. According to the University of Hohenheim, the online survey of 1,000 participants is representative of the population in terms of age, gender and federal state. It was conducted between May 1 and May 17, 2024.
