Web tips: Stumbling blocks against forgetting
In memory of the victims of the Nazi era: "Stolpersteine NRW" offers a wide range of activities that bring the fates of the victims and their relatives to life.
The Stolpersteine by artist Gunter Demnig help to keep the memory of the atrocities of the Nazi era alive throughout Germany. They are brass paving stones embedded in the ground with heads that look like small memorial plaques. Demnig lays them in the sidewalk in front of the former homes of victims of National Socialism. Each Stumbling Stone bears the name of a victim, their date of birth and their fate.
WDR has listed the approximately 17,000 Stolpersteine in North Rhine-Westphalia on a website called Stolpersteine NRW. The map is also available as an app for Android and iOS. Biographical texts, illustrations, audio plays and historical photos bring the fates of the victims and their relatives to life. A school section on the website offers suggestions and materials for secondary school lessons.
