US chip manufacturer AMD is acquiring the Finnish AI startup Silo AI for around 665 million US dollars. The team from Helsinki will be integrated into the Artficial Intelligence Group, AMD announced on Wednesday. Founder and CEO Peter Sarlin will remain on board and continue to lead the team. AMD expects the deal to close in the second half of the year.
Silo AI was founded in 2017 and offers AI products for companies. At the end of last year, the start-up presented its first language model (Large Language Model, LLM). Unlike many other AI companies that use Nvidia hardware, Silo AI develops its Poro and Viking models on the Finnish supercomputer Lumi with hardware from AMD.

"Significant step"
AMD describes the acquisition as a "significant step" for its AI strategy. The manufacturer wants to offer AI from a single source and will be able to rely on Silo AI's approximately 300 AI experts in the future. "The acquisition of Silo AI significantly strengthens our AI software capabilities and expands our research and development in Europe," AMD CEO Lisa Su told Handelsblatt.
"We are very excited to add hundreds of world-class AI scientists and engineers to our team with extensive experience in developing cutting-edge models and LLMs," Su said. "This will further accelerate the deployment of AMD-based AI solutions."
