Intel Raptor Lake: Details on the warranty for defective processors

Numerous Core i-14000 and -13000 series processors get an additional two-year warranty. This is how it works.

Intel is extending the warranty on 24 desktop processors to five years from the date of purchase. This applies to boxed CPUs, which are purchased individually in the blue packaging, as well as to tray versions and processors from complete systems.

This is not a matter of course for tray models in particular, as these are actually intended for PC manufacturers and only reach the retail trade via detours. Intel does not normally grant a warranty on tray CPUs and retailers only have to cover the statutory warranty.

Included are all models from the Core i5-13600K and Core i5-14600K upwards, including the F and KF versions. From the Core i7 upwards, suffixless models such as the Core i7-13700 are also included. The T models and the other Core i5 and Core i3 should not be affected by the microcode problem.

The microcode is the processor's firmware, which is loaded via the flashed BIOS every time the system is started. It determines the behavior of the CPU, but in the case of the Raptor Lake family it causes increased voltages. This can cause the silicon to age unusually quickly, meaning that the processors can no longer maintain their clock frequencies. In the worst-case scenario, this can lead to crashes.

BIOS updates for LGA1700 main boards should be available soon. With the extended warranty, Intel wants to provide security if aging problems only become apparent in a few years' time.

There are no restrictions on the date of purchase: the warranty extension applies to both previously purchased processors and new ones.

Intel writes about the procedure in Europe:

  • "Buyers of boxed processors should contact Intel Customer Support"
  • "Buyers of tray processors should contact the reseller from whom they purchased the tray processor"
  • "Buyers of OEM and system integrator systems should contact the manufacturer of the system"

Affected parties who were previously unsuccessful with their RMA requests should contact Intel Customer Support
