PC manufacturers are increasingly pushing "AI PCs" onto the market: market researchers estimate that 14% of all notebooks and desktops delivered to retailers worldwide in the second quarter of 2024 were "AI-enabled". As the industry has now focused on this young segment - from processor manufacturers to PC manufacturers - significant growth can be expected in the second half of 2024, concludes market research firm Canalys.
Apple dominates the sector for the time being
According to the analysts' calculations, around 8.8 million AI PCs were shipped globally in the past calendar quarter. According to the market researchers' definition, all laptops and desktop PCs equipped with a Neural Processing Unit (NPU), i.e. a chip specializing in AI calculations, were classified as AI-capable.

According to the figures, Apple and macOS have so far dominated the AI PC segment with a share of 60 percent in the period mentioned, with Windows PCs accounting for the remaining 40 percent. Apple has been incorporating a neural engine into its own processors for many years, which have also been used in MacBooks and desktop Macs with the M chips since 2020. In contrast, Microsoft and the traditional PC manufacturers have only recently started to tackle this segment. In the price segment of Windows PCs over 800 US dollars, the share of AI PCs had already doubled by the beginning of the year.
Copilot button and Apple Intelligence
Canalys believes that the launch of the ARM-based Copilot+ PCs and the announcements of corresponding models by other PC manufacturers will now ensure further growth. There is great expectation in retail that customers will soon prefer computers with a Copilot button. There is also movement in x86 processors with Intel's Core Ultra and AMD's Ryzen AI 300. Apple only began marketing its own hardware as AI laptops in the spring. Apple Intelligence will not add specific AI functions to its own operating systems until the fall with macOS 15 Sequoia. Overall, Canalys expects around 44 million AI PCs to be delivered in 2024 as a whole, with over 100 million such devices being delivered next year.
