Raspberry Pi Holdings, Plc. is introducing a third variant of the Raspberry Pi 5: It reduces the amount of memory from previously 8 or 4 to now 2 GByte RAM – presumably still as LPDDR4X-4266. The rest remains identical, especially the BCM2712 processor from Broadcom and the I/O chip Raspberry Pi RP1.

The manufacturer gives a recommended retail price of 50 US dollars for the Raspi 5 with 2 GB RAM. In purely mathematical terms, this would be just under 54 euros including 19 percent VAT (not included in US prices). However, German retailers traditionally undercut the RRP slightly. Raspberry Pi Holdings, Plc. recommends 59 US dollars (64 euros) for the 4 GByte version; however, it is actually available for less than 60 euros (starting from 60,90 €).

The 2 GByte Raspi is particularly interesting for bulk buyers who purchase hundreds to thousands of Raspi 5 – where the small savings per single-board computer add up. Interested parties should research in advance whether 2 GB RAM is sufficient for the intended applications.

The company is currently keeping quiet about a high-end version with 16 GB of memory. Should such a version appear, the price is likely to rise above average: There is only space for a single memory module on the single-board computer and its price rises considerably beyond 8 GB.

In the IPO prospectus in June, Raspberry Pi Holdings, Plc. also announced that a modular version of the Raspberry Pi 5, the Raspberry Pi Compute Module 5 aka CM5, will be released in 2024. These modules do not have their own connections such as USB or HDMI; instead, they are plugged into carrier boards, which are available from all kinds of manufacturers. Further details about the CM5 are currently unknown.
