OpenAI is set to unveil a product this fall that is internally called Strawberry. It is, of course, an AI application – but not much more is known about its structure. Strawberry will ultimately be able to be integrated into ChatGPT, but will also support a new large language model, which will be called Orion. Strawberry is reportedly particularly good at math problems. Initially, The Information had written about the fall release date.
Large language models (LLMs) have so far regularly failed at math problems. This is basically due to the structure of the LLMs – they complete sentences according to probabilities. So far, they have only been able to solve math problems if they know the path and the answer as a probability, but not because they can calculate. Strawberry should now be able to solve math problems that the product has never seen before. The AI should be able to share and process tasks. Exactly how is not yet known.
Strawberry replaces Q-Star
The first rumors that Strawberry would be released and perform particularly well in math benchmarks were already reported in July. At the time, Reuters referred to internal sources. Strawberry is said to have previously been developed under the name Q* or Q-Star. Reports from the end of 2023 suggested that it was a milestone towards Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) because the task solution requires a certain degree of logical thinking. OpenAI did not comment on the rumors then or now.

In addition to math skills, Strawberry should also be able to take on other complex tasks, such as developing a marketing strategy. Again, it is not known how this will differ from the strategy that ChatGPT has so far proposed on request. According to the latest report from The Information, Strawberry can conduct "deep research". However, it also begins by saying that OpenAI could raise more capital – thanks to the announcement of a new product. OpenAI is dependent on large investments. The company does not earn enough money to continue its own research and development from its own financial resources. The major AI providers, including Meta and Google, see so-called agents that take over tasks for humans as the next step – and also the possibility of better monetization of AI services.
OpenAI is said to have already presented Strawberry to national security authorities in the USA. According to The Information, the model is also suitable for producing synthetic data that can be used to train other AI models, such as the aforementioned Orion.
