Sony introduces new FE 85mm F1.4 GM II portrait lens

Sony is launching the new FE 85mm F1.4 GM II full-frame lens on the market in September 2024. It is the successor to the lens of the same name from 2016 and, according to the manufacturer, combines high resolution, appealing bokeh and fast autofocus in a compact body.

The FE 85mm F1.4 GM II is part of the high-quality G-Master series and is designed for mirrorless E-mount cameras. According to Sony, it is particularly suitable for portrait, wedding and travel photography as well as for video recordings.

Optics and image quality

The lens is based on an optical design consisting of 14 lenses in eleven groups and uses two XA lenses (extremely aspherical) and two ED glass elements (extra-low dispersion) for error correction. According to Sony, this configuration reduces aberrations and enables a high resolution across the entire image. The AR Nano Coating II is designed to suppress reflections and ghosting effects.

A circular aperture consisting of eleven blades and reduced spherical aberration are intended to ensure a soft bokeh. Sony speaks of "smoother transitions from sharp focus to deep bokeh at f/1.4" compared to the previous model.

Autofocus and tracking

The manufacturer also states that the autofocus of the FE 85mm F1.4 GM II is up to three times faster than its predecessor. The autofocus should easily keep up with continuous shooting at 120 frames per second with the Alpha 9 III. The tracking performance is even seven times better than its predecessor.

The lens is equipped with two XD linear motors for fast autofocus. These should enable smooth focus shifts even when filming with an open aperture. Sony generally emphasizes the video capabilities. Focus breathing is minimal and the camera's breathing compensation is supported. The aperture ring can be operated silently.

Operation and design

The lens has two customizable focus hold buttons, an AF/MF focus adjustment switch and an aperture ring. The design is also said to be dust and moisture resistant. The front lens element has a fluorine coating, which makes cleaning easier.

The lens weighs 642 grams and is therefore around 20 percent lighter than the previous model. The dimensions have also been reduced by 13 percent: The FE 85mm F1.4 GM II has a diameter of 85 millimeters and is 107 millimeters long, while the filter diameter is 77 millimeters.

The FE 85mm F1.4 GM II will be available from September 2024. The recommended retail price is 2,100 euros.
