The open source software Keycloak is used for Identity and Access Management (IAM). In order to better follow the principles of Site Reliability Engineering and to simplify its use, the Keycloak team has set up a Special Interest Group (SIG), which emphasizes improved communication with users in practice.

Keycloak Site Reliability Engineers Special Interest Group
The background to the new Keycloak Site Reliability Engineers Special Interest Group (SRE SIG) is that Keycloak has so far offered little documentation and best practices in the SRE area. In addition, the Keycloak project is looking for faster feedback on changes so as not to destroy existing installations without offering a migration guide. The new SIG is intended to facilitate improved communication between the Keycloak development team and the people who use the open source software in practice.
According to the announcement, the desired outcomes of the SIG are: a simplified configuration and upgrade process, gathering best practices and feedback from real Keycloak installations to identify and prioritize new features, and informing users about current and future features.

heise devSec 2024 will take place in Cologne on September 25 and 26. The motto of the conference is "Secure software starts before the first line of code". The conference is aimed at IT professionals who focus on the topic of security and have to face the associated challenges.
The program of the conference, organized by iX, heise Security and dpunkt.verlag, offers more than 30 presentations over two days on the following topics, among others:
- SBOMs in practice
- Secure software development with AI support
- How does the development process become "Secure by Design"?
- A zero-trust architecture based on Anthos Service Mesh
- Integrating passkeys into your own applications
- The XZ/OpenSSH backdoor and its impact on the software supply chain
- Legal aspects of AI-supported software development
Initial topics and next steps
The SRE SIG met for the first time on August 19, 2024 and identified three initial discussion points:
- How can load tests be carried out for Keycloak?
- What are the right keycloak metrics to monitor and how can they be visualized in a dashboard?
- Is it possible to simplify the configuration and setup of Keycloak?
The status of regular meetings and their frequency is still unclear. The special interest group will discuss further details in the Cloud Native Computing Foundation's Slack channel #keycloak-sre-sig. Interested Keycloak users are encouraged to share their own experiences there.
Further information can be found in the blog entry on the announcement and the GitHub repository of the Keycloak SRE SIG.
