Instagram expands story function to include public comments
The social media platform now allows users to publicly comment on friends' stories. The new feature is intended to encourage more interaction.

Instagram is introducing a new function that makes it possible to leave public comments on Stories. Previously, users could only react to stories via the private message function without the interaction being visible to others. Only people who follow the creator of the story and vice versa can comment.
Just as short-lived as the stories themselves are the comments on the stories, which automatically disappear after 24 hours. However, users have the option of activating or deactivating the comments for each of their stories. It is still unclear whether the comments are archived after the story expires, as the technology portal The Verge reports.

Instagram has published an explanatory video about the new feature, which explains the functions and possibilities of commentable stories. The new comment function shows that Instagram Stories are playing an increasingly important role for user interaction and therefore for the social media platform.

In addition, Instagram also announced that some likes on posts will now be displayed as floating hearts, a display mode that is also used with the disappearing notes. These updates show that Instagram is increasingly focusing on engagement and interaction between users, rather than just passive scrolling through content.
