Fritzboxes: AVM starts with the distribution of FritzOS 8

AVM has completed FritzOS 8. The Fritzbox 7590 AX is the first to receive the update. New features include IPv6 in the Wireguard tunnel.

The next major FritzOS update to version 8 is ready. AVM is initially offering the new firmware for the DSL Fritzbox 7590 AX. All other current Fritzboxes, Fritz repeaters and powerline products will receive FritzOS 8 in stages – the complete distribution should take a few months.

AVM currently lists the following Fritzboxes, which should receive the update to FritzOS 8 accordingly:

Fiber + DSL: 5690 Pro
DSL: 7690, 7590 (AX), 7530 (AX), 7510
Fiber: 5590 Fiber, 5530 Fiber
Cable: 6690 Cable, 6670 Cable, 6660 Cable
Mobile: 6850 5G, 6890 LTE, 6850 LTE, 6820 LTE
Without modem: 4060, 4050, 4040

AVM previously tested the router operating system for months under the beta name FritzOS 7.90 Lab.

More than 60 new functions

In its own announcement, AVM speaks of more than 60 new functions. The web interface has some new overview pages, including a graphical display of the connected clients and their connection load. From there, you can prioritize individual devices whose Internet packets are given priority by the Fritzbox. The device names can be edited directly in the Mesh overview, now also in the guest network in addition to the home network.

Wireguard VPN tunnels now also transport IPv6 packets. Previously, such tunnels could already be set up using IPv6 as the transport protocol, which is useful for users on TV cable or fiber optic Internet connections with DS-Lite or CG-NAT, for example. However, only IPv4 traffic ran between the VPN endpoints within the tunnel.

AVM is also adding new Smart Home routines. For new customers, setup is more convenient if a Fritzbox has FritzOS 8 pre-installed: The router can then be configured from a smartphone using the MyFritz app.
