At the Open Source Summit in Vienna, the Linux Foundation announced the establishment of the "Linux Foundation Decentralized Trust", a foundation with the mission of promoting the development of open source technologies in the areas of blockchain, digital identity and cryptography. The existing Hyperledger Foundation and TrustOverIP will be merged into the new structure.

Members at the highest level of the organization include Accenture, DTCC (Depository Trust and Clearing Corporation), Hitachi and newcomer Hedera. Together they form the Governing Board. In addition, there are 13 new members at the "General Member" level.

The existing Hyperledger projects will be transferred to the new structure, for example Hyperledger Fabric, which has just been released in version 3.0. Some projects have changed their names. For example, Hyperledger Besu, an execution client for the Ethereum network, is now simply called Besu. There are also two new projects to mark the founding of the new organization: Hiero, a distributed ledger built on the hashgraph algorithm, and Lockness, a cryptographic key management software.

Hiero is one of the first projects under the new LF Decentralized Trust umbrella.

Blockchain-related projects have lost a lot of trust in recent years following the bursting of the NFT bubble, the FTX bankruptcy and crashes of cryptocurrencies such as Terra. According to the Linux Foundation Decentralized Trust, the goal is to provide a neutral home for open development and enable organizations to innovate with code that is secure and resilient.

The Linux Foundation is also planning to establish a Developer Relations Foundation. The field of activity of developer relations fulfils a hinge function within software development and mediates between organization, developers, product and marketing. Although companies have increasingly invested in the field of developer relations in recent years, the efforts have often remained fragmented, according to the Linux Foundation. The function of DevRel as a glue and mediator can also lead to unclear definitions of the activity. The planned Developer Relations Foundation wants to address these problems in future and emphasize the importance of DevRel in software development.
