SpaceX's Starlink satellite internet network has reached four million users this week. This was announced by Starlink on X on Friday. Company President Gwynne Shotwell had previously indicated at a meeting of the Texas State Budget Committee on Tuesday that Starlink would probably pass the 4 million customer mark this week.
Rapid growth
This means a rapid increase in customers within just a few months. In May, Starlink still had 3 million users.
Starlink was launched in October 2020 – initially with beta services. More than two years later, in December 2022, the first milestone was reached with one million subscribers. Just under a year later, in September 2023, the company broke the 2 million barrier; in May 2024, it reached 3 million users.

Starlink is virtually unrivaled with its satellite network comprising almost 6,000 communication satellites in more than 100 countries. Various providers are trying to build a similar network, including Amazon with Kuiper. However, none of the potential competitors have yet succeeded in launching their services commercially.
Yet the revenue is huge. Starlink is expected to bring in around 6.6 billion US dollars this year. That is 4.4 billion dollars more than two years ago, writes Space News, citing an analysis by the consulting firm Quilty.
