FritzOS 8 is available for two more Fritzboxes

AVM is distributing FritzOS 8 for the two WLAN routers Fritzbox 7530 AX and Fritzbox 6591 Cable.

The Fritzbox 6591 Cable uses a vertical housing, which is rather untypical for AVM.

The latest AVM operating system FritzOS 8 is available for two further models: the DSL Fritzbox Fritzbox 7530 AX and the cable model Fritzbox 6591 Cable. Users can initiate the update via the web interface at http://fritz.box or by default at http://192.168.178.1. Alternatively, AVM provides the images for a fresh new installation.

AVM has been distributing FritzOS 8 since mid-September – with the Fritzbox 7590 AX, three WLAN routers are now receiving the latest version. New beta versions (FritzOS Lab) for models such as the 7590, 7530 (each without AX), 4060, 4050 and 4040 are released in parallel. The final 8 version typically follows shortly after the lab updates.

Many new functions

The manufacturer is advertising more than 60 new functions. The web interface has some new overview pages, including a graphical display of the connected clients and their connection load. From there, you can prioritize the Internet packets for individual devices, such as gaming PCs. In the Mesh overview, the device names can be edited directly – now also in the guest network.

Wireguard VPN tunnels now also transport IPv6 packets. Previously, such tunnels could already be set up using IPv6 as the transport protocol, which is useful for users on TV cable or fiber optic Internet connections with DS-Lite or CG-NAT, for example. However, only IPv4 traffic ran between the VPN endpoints within the tunnel.

AVM is also adding new Smart Home routines. For new customers, setup is more convenient if a Fritzbox has FritzOS 8 pre-installed: The router can then be configured from a smartphone using the MyFritz app.
