Almost 16 years after the introduction of the SDXC memory specification, the time has finally come: the first microSD memory card with a capacity of two terabytes (starting from 224,59 €) is now on the market. Kioxia actually wanted to be the first manufacturer with such an offering, but was unable to meet the announced delivery date.

Now the Western Digital subsidiary Sandisk is the first: the manufacturer lists the Sandisk Extreme Pro with 2 TByte in its own webshop for 320 euros. Delivery is scheduled to begin in four to five weeks. Several retailers are also already taking pre-orders and have set November 14 as the shipping date. Only Amazon is conservatively specifying one to four months.

Like most MicroSD cards, the Sandisk Extreme Pro uses the UHS-I interface, which is nominally designed for up to 104 MByte/s. Nevertheless, the manufacturer claims a read speed of 250 MB/s and a write speed of 150 MB/s. This only works with proprietary technology. This only works with proprietary technology, which Sandisk has apparently developed further.

Previously, there were the unofficial DDR200 and DDR208 modes, i.e. double data rate transfer methods to increase the transfer speed to up to 170 MByte/s approximately. The manufacturer does not currently explain the technology for 250 MByte/s.

This is of little use to users anyway: the process is not standardized and therefore only works with certain card readers. New ones will probably be needed for the 250 MByte/s.

Sandisk has launched its first MicroSD Express cards at the same time as the 2 TByte card. Instead of the UHS-I bus, they use a PCI Express 3.0 lane for transfer speeds of up to 880 MB/s. Sandisk is the second manufacturer after Adata to offer MicroSD Express memory cards. Samsung has announced some, but they are not yet available.

However, there is not yet a single device that supports MicroSD Express. According to rumors, Nintendo could bring the Switch 2 with a corresponding card slot. The cards also run in UHS-I slots, but then with their speed limitation.
