In future, RTL Germany will use AI-generated video sequences as so-called advertising separators between editorial content and advertising inserts. RTL announced in Cologne on Monday that the new separators will initially be used in the group's pay TV channels. The process will then also be adopted for the free TV channels.
With the help of the text-to-video AI Runway, employees create visual content for trailers. Similar to Midjourney for images, Runway is an AI video generator that creates short film sequences by entering individual text specifications. The output videos achieve a high quality if the specifications are suitable. Only the length of the sequences is still limited to a few seconds - as of today –. This is sufficient for video cut-outs such as those used by RTL. A police car with sirens, for example, conveys the feeling that viewers expect in the crime segment in just a few seconds.
"AI sensibly integrated into everyday work"
"The production of commercial breaks is a further step for RTL Germany towards integrating AI-generated content efficiently and sensibly into our day-to-day work and anchoring it structurally within the company," said RTL manager Oliver Schablitzki. "Our special-interest channels offer the ideal platform for testing the new tool."

A real video shoot is no longer necessary for these sequences and, compared to realistic stock material from image and video databases, new possibilities open up for creatives. However, video generators are not yet a sure-fire success, as the comparison of three video generators on heise online shows.
