The Java ecosystem survey conducted by the Eclipse Foundation provides insights into trends in the Java world. The Jakarta EE Developer Survey Report 2024 suggests that the popularity of open source applications in the programming language environment is increasing and more and more developers are using modern versions of the platforms.

The study shows that 30 percent of respondents are already using the new Java 21, while the use of Java 8 has fallen from 61 percent to 55 percent compared to the previous year. Nevertheless, there are almost as many Java 8 users as Java 17 users: the use of Java 17 rose from 37 percent to 56 percent.

Almost a third of those surveyed already use the new Java 21.

One focus of the study is on Jakarta EE 10, which belongs to the Eclipse Foundation. The proportion of its users rose from 17% to 34% compared to 2023, while Java EE 8 fell from 46% to 40%. The study does not provide any information on whether Oracle's new licensing policy is a driver here. 30 percent of respondents plan to migrate from their platform (not just Java EE) to Jakarta in the near future. When evaluating these figures, it should be noted that Eclipse advertised the survey in the Jakarta environment.

According to the study, Java EE is losing users to Jakarta EE.

25 percent of participants stated that over 80 percent of their Java systems are already running in the cloud (previous year: 25 percent). As the architecture for Java systems in the cloud, 46% chose a hybrid architecture, 31% microservices and 18% the monolith. The trend is moving away from microservices, which accounted for 38% in the previous year. In terms of frameworks for cloud-native projects, Spring/Spring Boot is ahead of Jakarta (60 percent) and MicroProfile (32 percent) with 63 percent.

1049 participants answered Eclipse's questions in the spring, 82 percent of them from the developer environment (developers 50 percent, architects 22 percent, managers in the development sector 10 percent). The call was disseminated in the Jakarta environment via social media, newsletters, blogs and partner organizations. A summary of the results can be downloaded upon registration.
