Sunsets and forces of nature: The pictures of the week
Infinite expanses characterize this week's selection, from impressive sunsets and clear starry skies to powerful natural spectacles.

The sky in all its facets – from glowing sunset to dancing northern lights – is the current theme of the week. Our gallery photographers have captured natural phenomena in a variety of ways. There are quiet snapshots as well as dramatic moments.
Last light

The mountain church of St. Michael is photographed by dg9ncc on "one of the few evenings with few clouds". The setting sun shines sideways on the church in BĂĽsingen am Hochrhein. The last light sets the scene on this day.
Zanzibar sunrise

The calm yet dynamic boat motif shines through the sunset, which invites you to relax. "All you can hear is the water, admire the beautiful colors of the sunrise and watch the sea gently rocking the dhows back and forth," writes don_cuoio about this work. The Zanzibar sunrise was taken off the east coast of India in February 2012. In Photoshop, the boat was separated from its surroundings and given a slight motion blur, the background a stronger one. In the end, both layers were merged again and the colors were played with in Lightroom.
Mustang 1968 under the stars
(Image:Â Evgeni Tcherkasski)
The 1968 Ford Mustang under the stars reflects the entire clear starry sky in Sauerland on its dark blue paintwork. A picture of this kind, especially in the combination of car and astrophoto, is not often seen. Evgeni Tcherkasski used a wide-angle lens here, which distorts the motif, emphasizing the hood and making the picture look even more extraordinary.
Breheimsenteret
(Image:Â blackbaker)
Cold and icy, the Nigardsbreen glacier juts out behind the Breheimsenteret and, as blackbaker writes, "invites you to explore". This visitor center in Norway has a rather unusual architecture based on the mountains and seems to fit perfectly into the scenic surroundings.

Bay of Saint Michel-en-Grève
(Image:Â Braveman1954)
The shallow sea and the colorful sunset in the bay of Saint Michel-en-Grève in Brittany, France at the end of August 2011 with the seabirds resting in the foreground radiates a pleasant atmosphere. The evening mood is captured perfectly. "I was inspired to take this picture during a dinner on the terrace of a hotel by the clouds and the strong colors of the sky during the sunset, which were reflected in the water," writes Kurt O. Wörl.
El Paso - Isla de La Palma - 23.09.2021 - 22:32
(Image:Â nctec)
Impressive photos like this one were taken almost incidentally during the eruption of the Cumbre Vieja on the island of La Palma in the Canary Islands. "Together with a number of locals, we stand in the rain of ash and talk about the impressive scenery that is taking place two kilometers away from our eyes (and ears)," as Andreas Sievert writes. El Paso - Isla de La Palma - 23.09.2021 - 22:32 - a scene between fascination and horror.
At night by the sea
(Image:Â Wolzow1902)
Sometimes northern lights can also be seen on Germany's Baltic coast, such as Night by the Sea, which was captured by Wolzow1902. The purple-yellow color spectacle stretches impressively over the horizon and illuminates the otherwise dark night. "I don't think this will be the last time we have the opportunity to photograph the aurora borealis." This year, the auroras seem to be increasing over Germany.
