The mail servers of hosting provider Domainfactory have been struggling with disruptions and outages since last Friday. Recovery measures are still underway today, Monday, but should be completed by early afternoon.

The longer history of the IT incident can be found on Domainfactory's status page. The ticket was opened on Friday morning at around 10 am. At that time, mailbox servers that the company had assigned to a "mail cluster 3" were unavailable. However, some of the systems there were probably responsive again after an unspecified malfunction.
Domainfactory is working "at full speed"
The IT teams are "already working flat out to restore functionality", the company wrote there. Throughout the weekend, there were status updates stating that work was being done to resolve the problem, and occasional success reports for individual systems –, for example from Saturday, October 19 at 15:58, that Mailcluster3-1, 3-2, 3-5 and 3-6 were available again.

On Monday, 21.10.2024, at 9:28 a.m., it was reported that Mailcluster3-7 had been available again since around 8:20 a.m.

The current status indicates that the Mailcluster3-4 system is still in the recovery process. This should be completed around 1 p.m. and the server should then be available again. The technicians are already pointing out that due to the expected rush of requests, not all of them can be served immediately. It will therefore take some more time before Domainfactory users can access their emails again as usual.
When asked by heise online, Domainfactory did not immediately provide any further information on the server outages, which have now lasted for three days. The cause(s) of the outages remain(s) unknown for the time being: Whether it was a cyber attack, an uncompensated hardware error, problematic software updates or similar. If we receive information, we will update the report accordingly.
