The Polish robotics company MAB Robotics has made its four-legged robot Honey Badger suitable for underwater use. The robotic dog is now able to move along the bottom of bodies of water. This means that the amphibious robot can also be used in the water for search and rescue missions and inspections.

Honey Badger is a robot dog based on Spot from Boston Dynamics. It is 60 cm long and up to 50 cm high, depending on the position of its legs. Its width is 40 cm. The robot dog weighs 12 kg and can carry loads of up to 2 kg. It was built for use in difficult, rough terrain. The basic construction of the robot is correspondingly robust. Version 3.0, for example, is dust and, to a certain extent, water-resistant. It can also be used at temperatures between 0 °C and 40 °C.

This version of the Honey Badger is already being used to inspect heating distribution ducts as well as water and wastewater sewers in the Polish city of Poznań.

Navigation is autonomous or remote-controlled via a 5G network or a fiber optic cable. The robot is equipped with cameras and lidar for autonomous navigation. Depending on requirements, it has a customizable communication system and a replaceable battery with an operating time of up to two hours.

In the fourth version, which was presented at the beginning of 2024, the robot has been sealed in such a way that it can not only wade through shallow waters, but can also be used underwater.

The engineers at MAB Robotics tested the Honey Badger 4.0 in a swimming pool. At the bottom of the pool, it can walk on a tiled floor with its rubberized feet. MAB Robotics hopes that it can also be used on other underwater surfaces. It receives its control commands via a fiber optic cable. The company intends to market it as a universally applicable robot dog for a wide range of working environments. It can be equipped with customized sensors for almost any application.
