Apple will soon be solving a serious problem that is currently plaguing some buyers of the new iPhone 16: iPhones affected by the bug can suddenly freeze and then no longer respond to inputs, as users report. This can happen both in active use and in standby mode, for example, followed by an automatically initiated restart that makes the smartphone functional again. The error can apparently occur with all model variants – iPhone 16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max.
iPhone update expected to be released on 28.10.
It remains unclear how widespread the restart bug is and what exactly triggers it. The error has not yet been observed on the iPhone 16 models used by the Mac & i editorial team.
Apple has now confirmed the error and also promised a remedy: In the release notes of the pre-release version of iOS 18.1 released on Monday evening, the problem is listed as resolved. iOS 18.1 will be released in the coming calendar week 44, as the manufacturer has already stated – possibly as early as October 28.

iOS 18.1 also aims to solve these problems
According to the package insert, the first major update for iOS is intended to resolve other issues, including a bug in Apple's Podcasts app that marks unplayed new episodes as already listened to. Apple also promises that videos recorded in 4K at 60 fps can be played smoothly again – even if the iPhone has warmed up. Previously, there were sometimes noticeable stutters.
In addition, iOS 18.1 should resolve a problem with digital car keys: after restoring from a backup or moving to a new iPhone, the stored key sometimes loses its function and can no longer open or start the car. The error appears to be related to "convenience access" and has reportedly been observed in BMW models, for example.
