Minimalism in all its facets: The pictures of the week
From abstract shapes and misty forests: The photographers in this week's selection show the variety that is possible with minimalist photography.

Minimalism exists in many variations, as this week's theme shows. Pictures in a minimalist style often appear simple at first glance. However, such a motif must be deliberately and successfully designed so that it leaves an impression on the viewer. The photographers in our gallery present shots in which this has been wonderfully successful.
Light and shadow
(Image:Â ek3108)
Elisabeth Krimmer (alias ek3108) combines abstract structures and patterns for this shot. "This picture is a chance find, the façade of an underground parking garage and the shadow of the street lamp, which was in the middle between the two struts, resulted in the perfect geometric division for me." The diagonal lines, the grid and the interplay of light and shadow give this black and white photograph a strong graphic effect.
Obstacle
(Image:Â metapix)
The picture offers the viewer a minimalist composition consisting of a concrete footbridge and a metal ladder protruding from the water. The obstacle appears to stand in the moving, cool water. Metapix gives the photograph a clear division and lines through the composition, while the light reflection of the water lends the whole a certain dynamism.
A good journey
(Image:Â Heike Maier)
A wide sky stretches across the horizon. A single seagull flies towards the sunset, giving the scene a sense of freedom. "I don't know where the seagull wants to go," thinks Heike Maier. Nevertheless, she wishes it a safe journey.
Bavarian baroque in a matter-of-fact way
(Image:Â der Onkel Werner)
In Onkel Werner's recording, Bavarian Baroque in a matter-of-fact way, minimalism is written in capital letters: Only two elements can be seen. The frog's-eye view makes the building look imposing and the strong contrast between the sky and the façade gives the picture a two-dimensional effect.
Corners and edges
(Image:Â Joachim Kiner)
This very vivid picture shows a white concrete corner against a blue background. Joachim Kiner told us that it is a detail of a sculpture located in Ditzingen, Baden-WĂĽrttemberg. Postproductively, the "perceived interestingness" was emphasized on the screen through appropriate editing. Corners and Edges is "an interpretation and transformation".
Morning dew in the spider's web (2)
(Image:Â FotoFanPB)
In this second edition of Morgentau im Spinnennetz (2), Walter Nitsche (alias FotoFanPB) shows us what he found in a box tree in his garden one morning in early September: countless round pearls of morning dew stretching across a fine spider's web, glistening in the light of the morning sun and thus forming a visually appealing structure. This makes the macro shot something special.
Forest in the fog
(Image:Â g.j.b.)
Melancholic and mystical, g.j.b. shows this woodland in the mist. The trees stand out in high contrast against the fog in the background, which seems to stretch endlessly into the distance. At the same time, the viewer wonders what might lie behind this wall of fog.
