Some of you may have been surprised to receive this e-mail in your mailbox: Deutsche Post is discontinuing the postage account for private customers as of December 31 of the current year. Petty cash was a payment method for paying in the Deutsche Post online store. Customers could pay in credit via PayPal, Giropay or direct debit and then spend it in the online store.

Deutsche Post is now discontinuing this service as part of the "consolidation of payment methods", as the letter states, which should mean nothing other than the abolition of certain payment methods. Swiss Post is canceling its postage boxes for private customers and refers to its General Terms and Conditions (GTC).

Anyone who still has a credit balance on their postage account can of course have it paid out. To do this, they must log into their postage account once and add their details and bank account. Alternatively, Swiss Post also offers the option "waive the refund". Payments into the postage account are no longer possible, but existing credit can still be used up until the end of the year. Private customers should take action by December 31, after which the petty cash fund and presumably the deposited credit will no longer be available.

Swiss Post has set out more details in a FAQ list for customers. Other payment methods will, of course, remain in place, as will the online accounts at Swiss Post to which the postage boxes are linked. The postage boxes will not disappear completely either; the service will continue to be available for Deutsche Post business customers. However, they must agree to the new terms and conditions. From next year, private customers will still be able to pay directly by direct debit, PayPal, credit card, Google Pay or Apple Pay, but not with the credit from the postage account, which will no longer exist.
