Apple is introducing its "Tap to Pay" payment option in other European countries. It is now also available on the iPhone in Austria, the Czech Republic, Ireland, Romania and Sweden. The contactless payment option was already introduced in Germany in June. In the meantime, other payment service providers such as the Sparkassen-Finanzgruppe have also joined the ranks and are supporting the service.

With "Tap to Pay", iPhones can be used as NFC checkout terminals without the need for additional hardware. Customers simply hold their NFC-enabled debit or credit card, a smartphone with Apple Pay or Google Pay to the iPhone used as a cash register. However, a payment partner's iOS app must be installed on the retailer's device. The iPhone used must be at least an iPhone XS with the latest iOS version.

Adyen, SumUp and Viva.com are the first payment platforms to offer Tap to Pay on the iPhone in all five countries, Apple announced. In Austria, Erste Bank, Stripe, Lexi, Revolut, myPOS and PAYONE, hobex are also planning support. Tap to Pay works with contactless credit and debit cards from leading payment networks, including American Express, Discover, Mastercard and Visa.

Apple's payment option is designed to make it easier for small and medium-sized merchants in particular to accept contactless payments. The fees that merchants have to pay are set by the respective providers.

"Tap to Pay" has been around since 2022. The name is easy to confuse with a new function in iOS 18. Users can use "Tap to Cash" to exchange money directly between two iPhones by holding the devices together. However, this feature is linked to the "Apple Cash" account, which is only available in the USA, and therefore cannot be used in Germany.
