"Spectacles": Why Apple is now reportedly interested in glasses without AR
Real augmented reality glasses from Apple will be a long time coming. According to reports, voice-controlled glasses could be available sooner.
According to Meta, they are good business: thesmart glasses or Spectacles that the Facebook parent company sells together with eyewear manufacturer Ray-Ban. They sold "way better" than expected, said Meta boss Mark Zuckerberg in spring, without giving specific figures. There has been speculation for some timethat Apple is also interested in the technology - i.e. glasses with cameras and AI assistance functions, but without an integrated screen. The rumors have now been repeated by Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman in his weekly paid newsletter.
AR glasses for the whole day
According to the information, it is conceivable that Spectacles created by Apple, which combine AI functions with AirPods-like features, "could also be popular". Meta had already stated that Ray-Ban glasses could not be produced quickly enough to meet demand. According to Gurman, such glasses are a good interim solution for Apple until "real augmented reality glasses" are possible. But that's exactly Apple's goal : a Vision Pro the size of a normal pair of glasses that can be worn all day long."
Unfortunately, the technology needed for this was not yet available." Accordingly, the Vision Pro is a kind of compromise that combines virtual reality with a "makeshift version" of AR, which is created using high-resolution screens and cameras. Gurman believes that it will be a few years before there are real AR glasses from Apple. Accordingly, smart glasses without AR are another option. Although they do not display anything to the user, they can handle voice commands, record videos and make calls.
Further experimental ideas
Back in February, Gurman reported that engineers in the company's laboratories in Cupertino had discussed the possibility of building smart glasses. The idea is also to strengthen the wearables sector.
Apple is also said to be planning the creation of a tracking ring, as has long been known from other companies (including Samsung) - as a kind of add-on to the Apple Watch. However, the projects in the spring were initially still a "technology investigation", i.e. an early phase of experimentation. The idea of equipping AirPods with cameras also belongs to this group.
