iPad mini 7: Solution for "jelly scrolling"?
With the iPad mini 6, there was trouble over an unsightly scroll behavior – even a lawsuit was filed against Apple at the time.

With the iPad mini 7, Apple has apparently fixed a problem that caused a minor scandal and legal disputes with the previous iPad mini 6 model: so-called jelly scrolling allegedly no longer occurs. This is reported by the Apple blog Six Colors. As former Macworld editor Jason Snell says in the program, Apple appears to have made adjustments to the display hardware –, but it is unclear exactly which ones.
Jerky scrolling, but rarely noticeable
Jelly scrolling is a problem that many users probably only rarely notice, but many users cannot forget once they have seen it: It causes certain screen content to lag, which can be particularly noticeable when scrolling web pages. For Apple, however, this is "normal behavior" with an LCD screen operating at 60 Hertz, as found in the iPad mini. The screen content is updated line by line and therefore there is a minimal delay between the top and bottom of the screen being updated.
There was speculation that the "jelly scrolling" is so prominent due to a change in the orientation of the display controller. Some users did not want to accept this and filed a class action lawsuit against Apple for compensation in the USA in 2022. In 2023, the lawsuit was reduced in scope by the responsible judge, but was initially allowed to continue – The current status is unclear.
More details expected this week
Snell now claims to have heard that Apple has made changes to the screen area of the iPad mini 7 – although it is still an LC display (and not an OLED). This could (again) affect the display controller. Snell said in the podcast that he believes the hardware is now "different". "And probably better. And [the problem] is probably over." More information on this is not expected to emerge until this week.
The iPad mini 7 officially goes on sale on October 23, i.e. on Wednesday. The first test reports should be published today. Then it will be clear whether the problem has really been solved. The iPad mini 6 has been on the market since 2021 and is now being replaced by the iPad mini 7. Thanks to the A17 Pro, it offers an improved interior with compatibility with Apple Intelligence, among other things. The form factor remains unchanged.
