The rise of platform engineering – the next big thing?

Page 3: What's next for platform engineering?

Contents

Platform engineering is still a relatively young discipline, but it is already being discussed and tested intensively. For example, there is now a special conference on this topic, PlatformCon, which attracts thousands of interested participants. A standardized reference architecture that supports companies in introducing platform engineering and provides guidance considering the growing number of tools and capabilities is still lacking. Hopefully, the platform engineering community will develop one - possibly one that builds on the basic approach outlined in this article.

The sooner standards become established, the sooner the various tool vendors and cloud providers are likely to make efforts to adapt their tools and services to facilitate the adoption of platform engineering principles. Otherwise, just like SRE, DevSecOps and other practices in the DevOps cosmos, platform engineering could remain just another approach that companies use to try and solve their IT problems. So far, however, the signs indicate that platform engineering is rapidly gaining market acceptance and finding a dedicated, growing community. The chances are therefore good that platform engineering could help companies reduce complexity for their development teams and their workload, while delivering on the DevOps promise of delivering better software systems faster and more securely.
