Flexible cloud storage for backups: how it works with the Mac

There are several backup tools for the Mac that directly support various object storages in addition to typical offerings such as Dropbox and OneDrive (see table). The paid programs Arq 7, ChronoSync and GoodSync are particularly convenient. Arq is a pure backup tool, while ChronoSync and GoodSync are more of a synchronization solution – also including versioning. As a native Mac application, ChronoSync has the more powerful backup functions, while GoodSync has a broader range of support for target drives and protocols. Both programs are also ideal for synchronizing data across different drives and network storage devices.

If you don't want to spend money, Duplicati is a comprehensive open source tool that supports a large number of cloud storage devices. However, the tool is not always easy to use – and runs as a shell client with a web interface. Installation is also somewhat tricky and should ideally be done via Homebrew with the command brew install --cask duplicati.

Duplicati is a free backup solution for cloud and remote storage and also supports S3-compatible providers.

BorgBackup has a certain special status: The open source command line tool connects exclusively via SSH to compatible cloud storage (see table). It does not simply save files, but stores the data on the server in an efficient format, comparable to a repository of the Git version management system. The tool is somewhat more convenient with the graphical interface Vorta. But even here the operation is not ideal for beginners. You can find a comprehensive guide to BorgBackup in our sister magazine c't..

If you would like to use an object storage as a file storage, you can fall back on the file managers CyberDuck, FileZilla Pro, ForkLift or Transmit, which were originally developed as FTP clients. They work in a similar way to the Finder, but make it easier to transfer files and folders with their split view. There is also a more reliable progress indicator, bookmark management and the option to resume interrupted transfers.

If you want to access cloud storage directly via macOS Finder, you can use Mountain Duck or CloudMounter. They integrate S3 storage into the system as a normal volume. Mountain Duck is particularly interesting here, as it even supports versioning so that older versions of files can be accessed. Both tools enable any backup program to back up to cloud storage that does not actually support this.

With a tool like Mountain Duck, you can conveniently use S3 and other remote storage as a volume in the Finder.
