Apple Maps allegedly soon with advertising
Apple already earns a lot from search ads in the App Store. This could also be coming soon to the previously ad-free Apple Maps.

In future, Apple Maps users may (also) receive matching paid ads after entering search terms. According to a Bloomberg report, Apple's advertising department under service boss Eddy Cue is forging this plan. The map service would work in a similar way to its major competitor Apple Maps. Depending on the resolution, however, the advertisements may mean that the organic results are no longer visible or only partially visible if you don't want to scroll – However, this problem already exists in the App Store, where Apple has been allowing search advertising for some time.
Apple sees new markets
According to the report, the advertising department has recently been given a higher priority in Cue's empire. More money has been invested in search ads for the App Store. The unit is now also selling advertising in the News (not in the EU) and Stocks apps. Sponsors are also being sought for sports programs in TV+.

The idea of search ads in Apple Maps is already several years old. However, Apple has not yet implemented this and the app is conveniently ad-free. In an "all-hands" meeting of the Maps group, it was said that Apple is considering moving the "monetization lever". However, a date has not yet been set and there is still a lack of technical implementation. It is also conceivable that customers could pay for their locations to appear more prominently in Maps.
Large target group for advertisers
In contrast to Alphabet and Meta –, Apple does not actually see itself as an advertising company –. Instead, the company sells hardware, software and related services. However, due to the fact that Apple has billions of users, its offerings and platforms are highly interesting for advertising customers.
Back in the days of Steve Jobs, Apple had its own advertising department for in-app advertising with iAds. Now, however, the company focuses on advertising directly in its own apps such as the App Store, Stocks and News. With this division, Apple is entering into direct competition with the aforementioned advertising companies, but must pay particular attention to its data protection image. Apple recently got into trouble with the German Federal Cartel Office due to restrictions on tracking between apps. The competition authorities believe that Apple is favoring itself.
